Experiment 2
My second experiment will be a lesson plan for COVID-19 awareness and infection control for elementary schoolers. This initially began as an idea for a public health campaign and a few posters around a school, but the most memorable, cool, and fun experiences I had were having stations with healthcare workers coming in, touching pig’s lungs, and field day. The common theme with these was having action and activity in conjunction with learning. I think that making stations and fun learning opportunities might be more conducive to learning and engagement in the classroom. This could be a special event at the beginning of the school year when kids come to a big set up in a gym with different stations to learn about what COVID-19 is and how to be safe. There could be several stations, one of DIY-ing masks or decorating a mask, Do’s and Don’ts of COVID matching game, Jeopardy, Graph of outbreaks in the US (who has the most COVID, what they can do to prevent getting it), What is COVID-19 and signs and symptoms, how to safely have fun discussion, hand washing station + evaluation. At different stations there might be stickers, pins, and bookmarks about what COVID-19 is and fun activities that are COVID-19 safe. It connects to my article of origin by being an informative way to teach people basic health practices that can keep them safe during the pandemic. There isn’t an approved vaccination for children right now, so they will likely have to adhere to extended COVID-19 precautions for long into the future.
