Here is a lesson plan about science classes which is applicable because COVID-19 is science related. It highlights 3 E’s along with some framing that can be used to assess prior knowledge:

  • Engage: Maybe have teacher highlight the event before it happens, asks class what COVID-19 is, and hypes it up

  • Explore: This could be part of the Graph and dos and don’ts.

  • Explain: This could be a basic explanation before everyone sits down, “like a cold, but way worse.”

  • Elaborate: How can these tools be applicable in the future; hand washing, etc.

  • Evaluate: group discussion at the end?

These are good ideas to appeal to my audience of children. I think that it is important to meet them where they are at, keep them engaged by engaging them in some sort of activity, show them why things are relevant, and then evaluate to see how this worked and what can be improved for next time.

Here is a COVID-19 lesson plan from a science teaching site. It has good things and ways to engage students to help them talk about COVID-19 in a non-scary way. It uses things like the common cold as a reference. It includes videos for kids, and how to facilitate conversation and engage kids. They recommend using small groups first as well as asking students what they have heard about COVID-19 before. I could even frame something as “how have things changed since last year, why are they like this, etc.). It also explains what germs are and that not all are bad. The goal is to educate kids without scaring them. Before looking at this I might have gone into it showing death statistics which would probably be a bad idea for elementary schoolers. Now, I can just acknowledge that it is a harmful virus that makes people sick without really scaring anyone.
